Water-resistant and dustproof ebook reader products for travelers

2019-04-22

When a book lover is planning to take a vacation, the inevitable question is: which books to take along, and which device to use for reading? Fortunately, the number of books that can be packed in a suitcase is almost irrelevant because even the cheapest ebook reader, phone or tablet can store hundreds of books. More important question is where and how you intend to read them. If it is on a beach, by a pool, in a camp site, or on a boat, you might consider a water- and dustproof e-reader device.

Here are the water- and dustproof ereaders that are available in the main markets of the world in 2019.

Kobo Aura H20
The Kobo Aura H20 features a 6.8 inch screen in waterproof body. This makes it a bit larger than your average six inch ebook reader, but the Aura H20 display is sharp (265 ppi, pixels per inch). List price starts from 180 euros.

Kobo Forma
The Kobo Forma ereader comes with a waterproof 8 inch E ink screen. The size of the screen makes it possible to read PDF documents and ebooks as well. A design choice encourages people to hold the device horizontally, or in one hand. Priced at 280 euros.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite
For people who have invested in Amazon Kindle ebooks, the Kindle Paperwhite is often ranked as the favorite e-reader. Only the latest Paperwhite is waterproof, so check yours before taking it to the sea. Six inch E ink screen in high 300 ppi resolution. Prices start from 130 dollars.

Amazon Kindle Oasis
The Kindle Oasis is the flagship ebook reader product from Amazon that is also waterproof. The Oasis has a couple of differences compared to the other Kindle devices: the screen is larger – seven inches in size, and the device is not symmetrical.

Here are two products that are available in select markets only.

Pocketbook Aqua 2
The Pocketbook Aqua 2 is a compact six inch ereader with basic features, but it is water-resistant. Its availability is limited, but for instance Amazon lists the product. It is also one of the most affordable water-resistant e-readers.
Tolino Epos waterproof ebook reader
Tolino Epos
Tolino is an ebook and ereader brand that makes products primarily available in Central Europe. The Epos is waterproof e-reader with 7.8 inch screen.

Is this a rugged ereader?

The Kobo Forma may have not been designed primarily as a rugged device, but because of its design choices, it is more durable than many other large screen ereaders.

First, for an eight-inch ereader, the Forma is light. In fact, it is lighter than many smaller ereaders.

Second, plastic components have been used in the product to keep the weight down and to make it less prone to fractures. Even the screen, consisting of the E ink Mobius technology, is made of plastic.

Third, the device has a bit of flexibility. This is why the Forma can take some knocks without instantly breaking apart.

It is also possible to get a waterproof case for an ereader. Some of the cases are transparent bags that let you read with the ereader sealed in the bag. Other solutions can be found as well, like cases that protect the device from bumps.

8-inch ereader Kobo Forma has been designed to stand a knock or two

2018-10-07

Kobo was one of the first companies to market larger than six inch e-readers, and it also has pioneered in bringing features like frontlight and waterproof shells to devices. Now, Kobo has introduced a high-end ereader with 8 inch screen, front light, and rugged features that the company believes will keep the device intact in diverse reading environments and during travels.

For an eight-inch ereader, the Forma is truly light. In fact, it is lighter than some smaller ereaders. The reason is that plastic components have been used in the product to keep the weight down and to make it more rugged. Even the screen, consisting of E ink Mobius technology, is made of plastic.

The result is a device that has a bit of flexibility. This means that the Forma can take some knocks without breaking apart or without precious screen shattering into pieces (because it is a plastic screen). The product is also waterproof down to two meters deep water.

A design decision that instantly catches the eye is that the Kobo Forma looks like the product has been meant to be held in landscape position. It just looks so natural in landscape. Ebook readers who like to have large fonts on the screen will find landscape comfortable. Naturally, it can be held upright so that the keys are on the left hand or right hand side as well. The display rotates automatically.

Which features explain the price of the Kobo Forma?

The Kobo Forma is priced at USD 279 / 279 euros / GBP 239. The SleepCover case & stand costs USD 49 / 49 euros / GBP 39.

Kobo highlights that the Forma is designed to be a durable ereader. The Mobius technology used in the display has a flexible plastic layer. This makes the thin and lightweight device to withstand the wear and tear of daily use. In tests, the Kobo Forma has survived drops of more than two meters, as well as bends, twists, dangerous objects in handbags, and pressures in tightly loaded backpacks.

Below you can view a hands-on video review of the Kobo Forma (at 1 –> 8 minutes, and a comparison with the 7-inch Kindle Oasis from minute 8 onwards):

How to restore a book damaged by water to its former glory

2017-10-28

For paper books, water is a dangerous element. If a book gets wet, nothing will restore it to the same condition as it was before the damage was done, but it is possible to get quite close. Conservation experts at the Syracuse Library have produced a video that shows how a book can be saved.

saving a wet book by Syracuse Library
The tools required for saving a book should be easily accessible at every home (apart from the book press), except for the fan that is not a common household item in countries located in cool regions. What to do if there is simply no fan in the house?

Here is the book rescue video by Syracuse University Library’s Department of Preservation and Conservation.

The next thing related to books that I am going to buy is a waterproof ereader with a case that can take a few bumps and knocks.

Amazon Kindle Oasis ereader has grown only an inch, but it makes a difference when reading ebooks

2017-10-14

In the very early days of the Kindle ereaders, Amazon marketed a product with a tablet-size screen. It didn’t live for long, although second-hand units are still readily available. Then, Amazon simply decided that six inches is the only proper size for ereaders. Now, the company has changed its mind. The Kindle Oasis with its seven-inch E ink display enters Amazon into competition with ereaders that come with 7.8 and 8–inch screens. As we recently wrote, this screen size has quickly become a new attractive product category in ereaders.
Amazon KIndle Oasis 7-inch is waterproof
In addition to the 7-inch display, other key features of the large-screen Kindle Oasis are:

– The unit is waterproof: read on a beach, in the bath, and it is also more durable for travel.
– Audible audiobooks are compatible with the device.
– VoiceView screen reader can read aloud text on the screen.
– Front light illuminates the screen for reading even in dark.
– Free cloud storage space for all content downloaded from Amazon.
– Wi-fi and/or mobile network connectivity depending on the model.

A couple of things to notice in the Kindle Oasis 7 are that there is no headphone jack, but you have to have Bluetooth headphones, the ereader still doesn’t open EPUB-formatted ebooks, and models with lowest price tags come with ads.

The prices start from 250 USD for the seven-inch Kindle Oasis. The cover must be purchased separately (if you need one). The kindle Oasis 7 base price point is at the same level as competitors’ 7.8 and 8-inch models.
Amazon KIndle Oasis 7-inch model is waterproof
Why 7.8 and 8-inch are becoming so popular that even Amazon decided to make a product that has display larger than six inches? Reading is more comfortable on a larger screen. This is, of course, very personal. For instance, I like to read from a 10-inch screen. More texts fits into a page, pictures look better, and if I enlarge the font, it can still display a fair amount of text. For a balanced view on the pros and cons on the different screen sizes (from 6 to 13 inches) of ereaders, read this article.

Hands-on video of the 7-inch Kindle Oasis by Cnet shows how significant the size difference is to the 6-inch model.

As it happens, Tolino, a major ereader brand in central European markets has introduced a product that comes with a 7.8 inch E ink display. The highlights of the Tolino Epos ereader are large and sharp screen, waterproof unit, front light (for reading in dark), possibility to categorize ebooks into collections and a built-in translator for a few languages.

Tablet designed to endure the roughest conditions travelers and hikers may encounter

2015-07-23

In addition to a mobile phone, many travelers carry a laptop or tablet along for their trips. Travelers buy protective cases for these electronic devices, trying to carefully protect them, but a sandstorm, tropical rain, or accidentally dropping the device on a floor may destroy it, anyhow. Dell has designed a tablet that the manufacturer claims can take almost any kind of beating and stand almost any kind of weather.
dell latitude 12 Rugged Tablet
The Dell Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet is not a small pocket-size tablet, but a serious work machine in 11.6-inch size.
– Water- and dustproof (IP-65).
– Operating system: Windows 8.1, Windows 7, or Windows 10.
– 11.6 inch Direct-View outdoor-readable HD display.
– Gloved-enabled multi-touch capabilities.
– QuadCool™ thermal management.
– Fifth Generation Intel® Core™ M processors.
– Up to 12 hours of battery life. Two built-in 2-cell batteries.
– Wi-Fi, optional mobile network connectivity.
– GPS
– Dimensions: 12.3 x 8.0 x 0.96-inch (312 x 203 x 24 mm)
– Weight 3.57 pounds (1.62kg).

The obvious downside of the large battery, relatively large display and protective elements in the case is that the tablet is pretty heavy. Techradar expects the price for Dell’s high-end tablet to start from $1600.

The rugged tablet is primarily targeted at enterprises, but as the video indicates, travelers, hikers and outdoors lovers may find it useful. Should it have an optional satellite link as well? There is no mobile network in truly remote places, after all.

Plunge into a pool with waterproof printed book

2015-06-24

Sure, we have ereaders where our ebooks survive without a problem even if we happen to drop the valuable electronic device into a pool, but what if someone still insists on reading printed books in such wet conditions? A team of book lovers, Bibliobath, has figured out a way to produce affordable waterproof printed books.

bibliobath waterproof books

Bibliobath is raising money for their project on Kickstarter, so you can’t find waterproof books in bookstores yet, but here is how the team is going to make waterproof books reality.

Bibliobath has selected four classic books by (one from each author)
– Mark Twain
– W.B. Yeats
– William Shakespeare
– Sun Zi

The technical side of printing a waterproof book is that special materials have to be applied. Bibliobath has tested blank prototypes of the books, and has found the right materials that provide fully waterproof binding and paper. Also different inks have been tested at various water temperatures and soap types. The books will be made of synthetic paper made from polypropylene, which is fully waterproof but feels like real paper at a thickness of 0.085 mm.

Here is a video where Jasper Jansen presents the mission for the waterproof book.
