Water-resistant and dustproof ebook reader products for travelers

2019-04-22

When a book lover is planning to take a vacation, the inevitable question is: which books to take along, and which device to use for reading? Fortunately, the number of books that can be packed in a suitcase is almost irrelevant because even the cheapest ebook reader, phone or tablet can store hundreds of books. More important question is where and how you intend to read them. If it is on a beach, by a pool, in a camp site, or on a boat, you might consider a water- and dustproof e-reader device.

Here are the water- and dustproof ereaders that are available in the main markets of the world in 2019.

Kobo Aura H20
The Kobo Aura H20 features a 6.8 inch screen in waterproof body. This makes it a bit larger than your average six inch ebook reader, but the Aura H20 display is sharp (265 ppi, pixels per inch). List price starts from 180 euros.

Kobo Forma
The Kobo Forma ereader comes with a waterproof 8 inch E ink screen. The size of the screen makes it possible to read PDF documents and ebooks as well. A design choice encourages people to hold the device horizontally, or in one hand. Priced at 280 euros.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite
For people who have invested in Amazon Kindle ebooks, the Kindle Paperwhite is often ranked as the favorite e-reader. Only the latest Paperwhite is waterproof, so check yours before taking it to the sea. Six inch E ink screen in high 300 ppi resolution. Prices start from 130 dollars.

Amazon Kindle Oasis
The Kindle Oasis is the flagship ebook reader product from Amazon that is also waterproof. The Oasis has a couple of differences compared to the other Kindle devices: the screen is larger – seven inches in size, and the device is not symmetrical.

Here are two products that are available in select markets only.

Pocketbook Aqua 2
The Pocketbook Aqua 2 is a compact six inch ereader with basic features, but it is water-resistant. Its availability is limited, but for instance Amazon lists the product. It is also one of the most affordable water-resistant e-readers.
Tolino Epos waterproof ebook reader
Tolino Epos
Tolino is an ebook and ereader brand that makes products primarily available in Central Europe. The Epos is waterproof e-reader with 7.8 inch screen.

Is this a rugged ereader?

The Kobo Forma may have not been designed primarily as a rugged device, but because of its design choices, it is more durable than many other large screen ereaders.

First, for an eight-inch ereader, the Forma is light. In fact, it is lighter than many smaller ereaders.

Second, plastic components have been used in the product to keep the weight down and to make it less prone to fractures. Even the screen, consisting of the E ink Mobius technology, is made of plastic.

Third, the device has a bit of flexibility. This is why the Forma can take some knocks without instantly breaking apart.

It is also possible to get a waterproof case for an ereader. Some of the cases are transparent bags that let you read with the ereader sealed in the bag. Other solutions can be found as well, like cases that protect the device from bumps.

Tolino makes Epos, an 7.8-inch ereader available to ebook patrons in Europe

2017-10-12

Recently, we wrote about a new ereader product category – devices with 8-inch display size – that was turning into a mainstream thing. As it happens, Tolino, a major ereader brand in central European markets has introduced a product that comes with a 7.8 inch E ink display. The highlights of the Tolino Epos ereader are large and sharp screen, waterproof unit, front light (for reading in dark), possibility to categorize ebooks into collections and a built-in translator for a few languages.

Tolino Epos has all the features that one may expect from a high-end large screen ereader: high-resolution touch screen, wireless ebook shopping, front light for reading in poor light, and many features that allow readers to adjust the actual reading experience.

The product’s list price is 230 Euros which is competitive when compared to similar, other brand products, such as the 7-inch Amazon Kindle Oasis, or the 7.8 inch Kobo Aura One.

Tolino products are available in central European countries, but you can find out the availability of the product in your country at Tolino’s web page.

The best ereaders for ebook lovers in 2015

2015-11-18

Dedicated ereaders with black-and-white displays remain the favorite reading devices for two types of people: those who read a lot and those who travel. People who read a lot like the pleasant, flicker-free contrast of the screen and simple functionality, whereas travelers like to load lots of books into a small and light device which is not a business- or privacy-critical item (in case the device is broken or lost). Which ereaders are the best picks of 2015?

First, let’s take a look at the top four ereaders in 2015 ranked by the Ebook Reader.com. The blog, specialized in ereaders, has tested and reviewed new products and ranked them by their features, usability and value.
amazon kindle paperwhite 3, outdoors
1. Kindle Paperwhite 3
The Kindle Paperwhite 3 has deserved its number one place as the best overall ereader after a few iterations of the model (version 3). Available at Amazon stores at $120.

2. Kobo Glo HD
Kobo runs a bookstore that has perhaps the largest selection of EPUB books available. Kobo also manufactures ereaders, but their availability is limited to few markets. In some countries, Kobo ereaders are available at ordinary bookstores (France’s largest bookstore FNAC is one of these). Kobo Glo HD is available at $129 at Kobobooks or at bookstores.

3. Kindle Voyage
The Kindle Voyage is at the high end of the scale when ereader features and prices are compared. The Voyage is ranked as the best premium ereader. Price $200.

onyx boox i86 ereader
4. Onyx Boox i86
The most common ereader screen size is six inches. It is actually difficult to find products with larger screens, but the Onyx Boox i86 is one of them. Price $280 at Amazon.

After global brands like Sony and Samsung withdrew from the ereader market, availability of products is very different in different parts of the world. In addition, regional products only targeted at certain markets are being marketed by bookstore chains or retail electronic chain stores.

For, example, Tolino ereader and ebook store in Germany is practically as popular as Amazon Kindle and its German ebook store. In Scandinavia, online bookstore Adlibris is marketing Letto ereader that is available only from company’s online stores. Both Letto and Tolino are EPUB readers. A reason for the success of these regional products is that they are available in local languages, and customers can shop in online stores in their own languages.

Tablets and large smartphones (also known as phablets) have become so popular that many device owners are using them to read ebooks as well. And why not? Sharp, bright color display is a pleasure to view when reading non-fiction books or any books and magazines that include color photos or images (not to mention videos).
