A backup device for traveling photographers, video creators, and writers

On the road, it is essential to make a backup copy of all new photos, video clips and text documents as soon as possible. LaCie has introduced a rugged, battery-powered backup disk designed to be used without a laptop wherever you may be. The key feature is that it is possible to make a backup directly from a camera, phone or drone without a laptop.

Lacie DJI Copilot backup disk
LaCie DJI Copilot is a strange name for a backup hard drive, but the manufacturer has wanted to emphasize the mobility, ruggedness and storage space of the product. It has 2TB of space. The thinking behind the name is that you can take the hard drive along to a field trip, fly your drone (or take a ton of photos with your camera), shoot all the video you want and instantly create a backup on the hard drive.

If you have a camera, drone, smartphone or a laptop with files you want to backup, you can use one of the cables that come with the LaCie hard drive or insert a memory card into the device and create a backup copy.

The LaCie DJI Copilot also has its own smartphone application. Connect the smartphone to the LaCie with a cable, and you can view the contents of the drive. A really useful feature in the smartphone app is that you can rename files and delete unwanted images. A dull moment at an airport or time stuck in traffic can be used for something beneficial.

In the US, the product is priced at USD 350, and in Europe at EUR 400 at the moment. For 2TB worth of storage, it is a pricey product. It is possible to purchase an external hard drive with the same amount of storage space for EUR/USD 100, but they are not portable, and a PC is required for making backups.

Review: the best drones for travel video

Drones are one of the hottest product categories in photography and video recording at the moment. As consumer products, drones are still a new gadget category that is going through an extensive technology development phase. Two major technologies require development: image quality and ease of steering. Are any of the most popular drone brands ready for the big time? Here is a review.

Le Monde picked up four popular consumer drones that are available in the US, Europe and in other regions: 3DR Solo with GoPro camera, DJI Phantom 3 Standard, Parrot Bepop and Xiro Xplorer Vision.

Le Monde tested the drones for steering, reliability and safety, quality of images, stability of images, automatic flying capabilities, flying indoors, ease of use and price. After tallying up the scores for the tests, the winner drone was DJI. Based on technical features and usability, here are the best drones:

1. DJI Phantom 3 Standard, score 79 (price in Euros 820)
2. 3DR Solo with GoPro camera, 75 (price 2200)
3. Xiro Xplorer Vision, 74 (price 1000)
4. Parrot Bepop, 63 (price 460)

What is the best drone for shooting travel video?

It is not necessarily the same one that won the test because other factors come into play. When we travel, we have to make choices what we can take with us. It doesn’t matter if we fly, travel by train, by car, by motorcycle or by bicycle, the space for clothes, supplies and electronics is always limited.

The size and the shape of the drone is a key factor for determining if it can be taken along for a trip. DJI Phantom, for instance, is relatively large and shaped in a way that makes it very difficult to pack it in a backpack or in any kind of bag. The dimensions of the DJI Phantom are 18 x 13 x 8 inches / 46 x 33 x 20 cm.

Parrot Bepop, on the other hand, is relatively small and it has a low profile which makes it easy to carry along in a bag. Additionally, the drone is designed to be disassembled for transportation. Its dimensions are 28 x 32 x 3.6 cm without the hull and 33 x 38 x 3.6 cm with the hull.

Parrot Bepop can be complemented with an app titled Flight Plan that runs on smartphones and tablets. The application lets you create a route that drone must fly and camera angles that it must use to take still images and shoot video.

DJI Osmo is a camera that may change the way we shoot travel, outdoor and activity videos

DJI is a company that is renowned for its drones. Despite the wind and constant movement of the drones when they are flying, they can shoot stable video images because of gimbal image stabilization system DJI has developed for the drones. What if you took these image stabilization technologies and designed a handheld camera? DJI Osmo is the company’s first camera with a gimbal in it, and the video images shot with it look fabulous.

For instance, the DJI Osmo allows you to walk or jog and shoot video clips that look like someone had shot them on a movie camera that was installed on a crane. Beautiful video sequences can also shot when mountain biking, skiing or in other activities that require movement.

During our travels when we have discovered a truly interesting and visually rich place, we have wanted to shoot videos about street life while walking among the locals. This is not possible using even a high end SLR camera because their image stabilization systems can’t correct so large movements.

DJI Osmo maybe a solution to many problems travel, outdoor and activity photographers have. The product consists of two major elements: a camera with a built-in gimbal, and a handle that has some intelligence in it.
dji osmo camera with smartphone viewfinder
The camera has a high-resolution image sensor (see below for specs), but it doesn’t have a viewfinder or screen that would show what is really inside the frame. That’s why the camera comes with a smartphone holder. You can attach your phone to the holder, connect it via Wi-Fi to the Osmo camera, and use the phone as the viewfinder. Smartphone is required for other functions as well, such as remote control (up to 25 meters), adjusting advanced camera settings and different shooting modes. DJI Go app must be downloaded to the smartphone.

DJI has manufactured a few accessories that let you mount the camera to a bicycle, car, tripod, or another object that is suitable for the universal mount.

DJI Osmo comes in three configurations X3, X5 and X5R. The key difference is the camera, but even the entry level camera X3 can shoot 4K video and 12 megapixel still images. At the moment, the Osmo has very little competition, and it is reflected in the prices that start from 749 euros.
