Travel photo gallery 2016: Lapland, France, Belgium

2017-01-24

In 2016, my long project of photographing and writing a travel guidebook about Lapland was completed and the book will be published in early 2017. Since it was a long project, photos from Lapland has been included in earlier galleries as well.

Lapland covers the northern regions of Norway, Sweden and Finland, which makes it a large area to travel (geographically also Russian’s northwest region is Lapland, but it is not featured in the book). It has been called as the Europe’s last large wilderness and that is exactly what it is. Outdoors lovers’ and road travelers’ perfect destination.

Copenhagen ranked the best city by architecture, design and lifestyle magazine Wallpaper

2016-03-01

Architecture, design, and lifestyle magazine Wallpaper has announced its annual Design Awards for people, places and things that rocked the world in 2015. The capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, continues its winning streak; it was selected as the best city by Wallpaper.

The Wallpaper praises Copenhagen:

The Danish capital is growing increasingly extrovert and adventurous. In Vesterbro, the meatpacking district of Kødbyen is now an art hub; in Nørrebro, gourmet destinations share the same streets as alehouses; and in Christianshavn, Papirøen is a fertile enclave of creativity. Cradling one of Europe’s most distinguished design traditions has been a mixed blessing. The influence of the midcentury greats had previously eclipsed contemporary talent. But the latest wave of creatives, architects and chefs has fuelled a renaissance, and New Nordic is the cuisine and design movement of the moment.

We tend to look at Copenhagen from a traveler’s perspective, and we see different things, places and trends as the Wallpaper. We see a big city that is being developed with people who are moving by foot or by bicycle in mind. A city that wants to be (and feels also) liberal and safe both for residents and visitors. A city that is bustling with life and business without being hectic.

The last time we visited Copenhagen it was autumn, and the weather was grey. It was almost constant drizzle during those three days that we stayed in the city center. No one cared about the weather, and we didn’t care. Street-side cafes and restaurants were full of people. Some of the outdoors places had heaters to keep customers warm. People really enjoy every moment in Copenhagen. It is not about the weather, it is about what you make of it.

Travel photography gallery 2015: Helsinki and North Europe

2016-01-21

I have stayed in Finland for quite some time now, and many places, including the capital Helsinki have become familiar for me. Finland has its own unique culture (as explained by Russell Snyder and Irene de Benedictis in their own books), but I think I have learned the zen of the Nordic life: during winter, work and try to stay healthy, but in summer let all hell break loose and enjoy life.

In 2015, I continued photographing and taking notes on Helsinki for the travel guidebook that will be published later this year. Now, when I look at my photos I realize how green city Helsinki is in the summer (in winter it is either white or black, depending on the snow situation).

In the 2015 travel photo gallery we also have images from Erin who has a project in Lapland. Take a look at the gallery:

Travel photo gallery 2014: Sweden, Scandinavian countries

2015-01-29

In 2014, my travels took me to Scandinavian countries, primarily Sweden. Southern and western regions of Sweden along with Stockholm were the main destinations.

After exploring and staying on the West Coast of Sweden, I had more than enough material and contacts for interviews to write a travel guidebook Gothenburg and Sweden’s West Coast about this region that is the most popular vacation destination for Swedes after Stockholm.

The nice thing in this part of the Scandinavia was that it was possible to enjoy lively city life in Gothenburg and enjoy the great outdoors in the pristine archipelago of the West Coast.

Book trade professionals in North Europe are familiar with Gothenburg because of the annual Book Fair that is the largest in northern Europe.

Travel photography gallery for 2013: France, Germany

2014-01-28

Year 2013 and late 2012 was wonderful time in France, primarily in southern parts of the country. Traveling in the region took me to neighbour countries as well. That is why there are a few images from Germany (in addition to France) in the 2013 Travel Photo Gallery.

The result of all the travel in Provence and in Alpes Maritimes, and exploring villages, beaches, mountains, cities and towns was published in late 2013: travel guidebook The Gems of Nice and the French Riviera.

I have been asked a few times which is more fun or more work: writing or photographing? Both are a lot of work. A fraction of all the photos are selected for a final book. Also a fraction of the original text ends up in the final book, because text is edited, re-edited and finetuned many times during the process.
